Basic results of studying conditions of occurrence of instabilities that may disrupt the superconducting state due to perturbations of different nature are discussed. It is shown that the existing theories of stability develop independently of each other. Additionally, they do not allow one to describe correctly how the conditions of the superconducting state stability are influenced by a change in the thermal state of a superconductor, which inevitably takes place prior to arising of magnetic or current instabilities.
